This was a lovely, sweet, simple Regency. I would love to give it 5 stars because it was engaging and well-written. But it was just a little blasé. The prose was nice the heroine and her swains were expertly drawn and there were certainly several laugh-out-loud scenes. But there was something missing. I think it was a lack of scenery and perhaps a lack of secondary female characters. The author would set a scene and then dialogue would take over. This was enjoyable because the dialogue was excellent but reading it felt flat because there was very little background for it. Miss Foxworth was criminally underdeveloped. As was Margaret. These ladies could easily have been foils for Emma but only succeeded in being shadows. The men were very well-defined in contrast and being female myself I appreciated it, but as a reader it still made for an unequal literary experience. In any case, a solid 4 star read. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.Product details

An Infamous Proposal edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews
While this is most definitely one of Joan Smith's best works, it lacks the usual humour that is exclusively hers. It is a more serious read and thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks again for such wonderful entertainment
Joan Smith is a delightful writer. She and Barbara Metzger are my favorites for Regency novels that show wit and humor, plus a dash of understanding of what the mores and customs were of that time. This book will give great pleasure to all who read it for diversion. Enjoy!
This was one of those books for me that when I finished it, I had a satisfied smile. Initially Emma is pretty selfish, but we watch her character developed, and by the end I thought she was so sweet! Joan Smith has been my go to author after Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. Her books are usually fun and well written - this one is no exception.
A delightful romp through misadventures! At first I didn't like the main hero and so it was very enjoyable to witness the hurly burly characters marching through the pages of this delightfully silly story.
This was a great read. The dialog sparkled with wit and the characters were amusing. It certainly wasn't great literature, but for it's intended purpose - a light diversion - it was very good indeed.
About the diction - I checked the web and found that the first use of "umbrella" in English appears to be 1600. Since "umbrella" comes from "umbra" meaning shade, I think its use in the novel is reasonable. It's certainly not as bad as some errors I've seen, such as a Regency miss being thought "spacey"!
It was so much fun watching the h's beaux come and go while along the way she and the H slowly came to realize that they were in love. There was so much humor and so many humorous situations that you very much enjoy the journey. There is no angst and, oddly enough all of the characters are likable, even the supposed villain. The author has really created a treasure.
This is a cute, humorous Regency romance which ends just as we expect it to but the journey is fun and very entertaining. When Joan Smith is "on" she can be very good. There is never much that is deep but that's ok if the reader is looking for a light, pleasant story. This is classic Smith. I liked it very much.
