Rough Justice in Academia is the work of P.J. Thurbin, a relatively new writer to the fictional crime scene. His fast moving style will delight the reader who enjoys a likeable cast of characters while at the same time is challenged with having to unravel a mystery. This is the second in a series of books featuring Ralph Chalmers, full time university professor and part - time sleuth. It is centered on a modern University campus situated near the town of Kingston upon Thames just 12 miles from London. A group of academics find themselves embroiled in the murder of a retired colleague as he and his wife leave a local theatre. Professor Ralph Chalmers attempts to unravel the links between an incident involving suspected cheating by two students while taking their final University examinations some 20 years earlier and the murder.
While Inspector Linham and his Sergeant Wilson attempt to apprehend the perpetrator of the crime, Ralph has his own views, aided by his friend and former colleague Katie Eggerton midst suggestions of KGB and mafia involvement. When Ralph asks Sir George Rainton, one of the students involved in the long ago cheating incident, to be the keynote speaker at the spring conference, things begin to go decidedly awry.
The fast paced action moves between inmates at Holloway Prison, investigators working for MI6, germ warfare at government research establishments and the seemingly tranquil campus of the university which are all woven into the plot. It culminates with a banquet that the University hosts at Henry VIII’s historic palace at Hampton Court which provides an exciting setting for further mayhem. The dénouement demonstrates how greed and revenge can result in tragedy for villain and innocent bystander alike. This novel is a must for anyone who enjoys the thrill of a good murder mystery coupled with characters who become familiar friends.

When a former colleague of Professor Ralph Chalmers is killed on the way home from a play the police suspect a robbery attempt gone wrong, but Ralph suspects a link with an incident of exam cheating twenty years earlier, which the university covered up. Ralph's suspicions grow as more attacks and murders occur, all possibly linked to the cheating. In the end, both Ralph and police Inspector Linham are forced by their superiors to become part of yet another another cover-up. Sadly, Prof. Chalmers accepts a sabbatical as reward for his cooperation, while Inspector Linham has the good grace to refuse a promotion offered as payment in kind. Though low-key and enjoyable, the book is nonetheless rather cynical as it implies that things get done because people in high places exchange favors. There may be one or two editing mistakes where Prof. Chalmers is aware of a secret clue revealed to someone else a few pages earlier - someone unlikely to have told him. The book is non-violent by today's standards.Product details

Rough Justice In Academia The Ralph Chalmers Mysteries Book 2 edition by PJ Thurbin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Loved this series. One of my criteria in reading fiction is I must learn something while being entertained. This happens in each book. Gimme more!
The entire Ralph Chalmers series is well written, and a joy to read. I've read 4 now, and looking forward to more.
Fun entertaining, not sure if I will read more Ralph Chalmers mysteries. He is such a wimp at times, which is irritating at times.
There is so much unnecessary detail, story line and dialog in this book that it was painful to finish. I tried to slog through two other books featuring this pedantic professor turned sleuth, but I saw little improvement and even though I rarely abandon a book midway through, I did so on the final book of the three and have abandoned the series.
This is a pleasant, congenial, friendly little mystery. It moves along at a steady, slow pace with a bit of frantic action at the end. Its strength is its texture, atmosphere, and its interesting characters, if you enjoy the unique two-faced ambience of academia -- idealization of learning vs. the scramble for funding. No page-turner here -- in fact, it is easy to put down and pick up again; i.e., a perfect bedtime book, enjoyable but unlikely to cause insomnia. I confess to being partial to mysteries set in academia. I have written two myself. But I can easily imagine that a reader who does not find this environment congenial might experience "Rough Justice...." as a crashing bore. Professor Ralph Chalmers himself is an interesting amateur sleuth. With little more than his intelligence, sensitive nature, and affability he succeeds in finding his way through the riddles he confronts applying his determination, tenacity, and sense of fair play. Most of the major characters face uncomfortable choices with ethical dimensions. Truth is found, only to be suppressed or distorted by concessions to expediency, practicality, or enlightened self-interest --- Sounds like the murky clouding of idealism that takes the bloom off the rose of so many academic careers in real life. An ironist might retitle this book, "Roughly Justice in Academia." Given its genre, my only complaint is that the moral dilemmas major figures confront and the compromises they make are not so much shown as told to the reader. In my opinion, if the author made those conflicted moments come alive in greater depth and feeling, this book would be much stronger.
Perhaps the second worst mystery I've ever read. The first worst was the first book in this series. I had to try the second to see if it was as bad. The author has created one-dimensional, morally-bankrupt characters who cave in to their bosses, abandoning their supposed principles right and left--and Professor Chalmers and the cop are supposed to be the good guys. It is hard to believe the author has actually ever lived in England (for instance, Islington is not in South London). The dialogue is stilted, repetitive and sounds not at all like any conversation I've ever had in the U.K. The academic environment is unrecognizable, and the attitude of lecturers towards their students unacceptable. The classism and xenophobia (ridiculously inconsistent and anachronistic Cockney accents for workers and deep suspicion towards people from abroad) are repellent. Avoid these books if you have any love for literate British detective stories.
Given the occasional allusions to events in the first in the authors series with a college professor hero, I feel now I should have started with the Gypsy Hill Murders, first in the series. It affects reading this work to the smallest degree but might lessen the 'mystery' in the first.
This is not an exciting nor particularly suspenseful work, but, nonetheless a pleasant novel with an academic setting. The plot is a bit skewed, with secret service sort of stuff being added to the less spectacular possible motivations for the crimes, but these do add a bit of additional mystery to the book. The hero is pretty well delineated, a bachelor in his late thirties, with the key administrator, also being given real character. The remainder of the cast remain rather thinly drawn. If you are looking for a book to grab and hold you tight in its clutches, this is not it. On the other hand, if you seek a book with a leisurely pace, moderate interest and easy to put down and pick up again, this should fit the bill.
